Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. Same chemical composition, same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), same crystal structure, same brilliance, same behavior under every grading test a gemologist runs. A certified lab-grown diamond is indistinguishable from a certified mined diamond except by the equipment used to determine its origin, which is why major grading bodies certify them using the same protocols as mined stones. What differs is how the crystal was formed. Mined diamonds grew underground over millions of years. Lab-grown diamonds grow over weeks in a controlled environment that replicates the same carbon-crystallization conditions.

For jewelry, this distinction matters in two places. First, ethically and environmentally: lab-grown diamonds do not require mining, which means no extracted earth, no forced labor risk, no opaque supply chain.
