Gold Earrings

Kostas dropped a pair of solid gold earrings into a cup of coffee on a Wednesday morning in February and that accident became our unofficial quality test. The coffee was hot, freshly made, and the earrings sat in it for approximately four seconds before Kostas fished them out with a pair of pliers and language that we will not reproduce here. The earrings were completely fine. No discoloration, no surface change, nothing. Kostas, still upset about his coffee, pointed out that a plated earring would have shown damage from that temperature and acidity within those four seconds, which is actually true because the thin plating layer reacts to acidic liquids faster than most people realize. He did not spill his coffee on purpose to prove this point but he has been telling the story to every customer who asks about the difference between real gold earrings and plated alternatives for three years now, and we have stopped trying to get him to use a more professional example because the coffee story works. People remember it. Kostas tests random pairs from each production run by submerging them in a solution that is significantly harsher than coffee. He calls it the stress bath. It contains chemicals we sourced from a dental lab supplier.
