Gold plating is nothing more than a micron-thin surface layer of gold applied over base metal, with no structural depth, no lasting integrity, and no intrinsic value. A micron-thin layer of gold applied over a base metal that will inevitably wear through with friction, moisture, and time, leaving the piece dull, discolored, and unrepairable. Solid 14k gold carries the same composition from surface to core, meaning it cannot plate off, cannot tarnish in the way base metals do, and can be polished and worn across decades without losing its integrity.
