The chain weight has to fall in a narrow window where it is heavy enough to drape without curling but light enough to not announce itself against a collarbone. We calibrate our thin gold chain necklaces between 0.8 and 1.2 grams depending on length and pendant load. Below 0.8 and the chain tangles in its own clasp ring during normal movement. Above 1.2 and it starts to feel like a necklace rather than a small gold necklace that happens to be there.

Our Athens workshop tests every gold dainty necklace design through what we call the hair test. If the chain catches in hair when you pull a sweater over your head, the link profile is wrong and goes back to the drawing board. A proper delicate gold necklace should be invisible to the touch and visible only when light catches it at the right angle. That is the standard and anything that falls short of it does not leave our bench.
