My grandfather Vouclos had this thing he used to say. I must have heard it a thousand times growing up in the workshop, to the point where I was mouthing it along with him before I was even old enough to sit at the bench.
"An earring should never touch a woman's shoulders. And it should never make her wish she had taken it off."
Now, he was not trying to be philosophical. The man was a goldsmith, not a poet. What he had seen, over and over again across decades of making jewelry in Athens, was women pulling earrings off by lunchtime. Dropping them in a purse. Leaving beautiful pieces in a drawer because they simply hurt to wear for more than a couple hours. And for someone who spent his entire life shaping metal with his hands? A piece that nobody wears might as well not exist. That thought genuinely bothered him.
Three generations later, that same idea runs through everything we make at ENEA Studio. Especially our earrings.
Why 14k Gold for Earrings? Because My Grandfather Refused to Work in Anything Else
Pure gold is 24 karats. Gorgeous to look at. Completely impractical for earrings. Too soft, too heavy, warps if you look at it funny. So we mix it with other metals (silver, copper, zinc) to make it strong enough to actually function as jewelry you can wear.
14k gold is 58.5% pure gold. My grandfather worked almost exclusively in 14k for earrings. He had his reasons and they were not complicated: it gave him that deep, warm gold color his clients in Athens expected, but with enough backbone that a thin earring post would not bend the first week someone wore it. A delicate hoop would hold its shape for years. He did not want callbacks. He wanted pieces that worked.
We offer a lot of our designs in 10k as well, and 10k is perfectly good. Real gold, solid, no plating nonsense. But here is the thing about earrings specifically that I have noticed working with both alloys for years now: 14k shows its color advantage more on earrings than on any other type of jewelry. Because they sit right next to your face. They are catching light every time you turn your head, every time you laugh, every time you brush your hair back. That little bit of extra warmth and depth in 14k? Up near your face, you actually notice it.
Weight: The Thing Nobody Talks About (and the Only Thing That Really Matters)
OK so here is my frustration with how earrings get sold online. Go to any major jewelry site. Click on a pair of earrings. You will see dimensions listed. Length, width, maybe thickness if they are being thorough. What you almost never see? Weight. And I am telling you, as someone who has been designing earrings in Rhinoceros 3D for years and watching women try them on in person, weight is THE factor. The one that decides whether you wear a pair for ten years or ten hours.
My grandfather figured this out the old fashioned way, through decades of watching customers. I have the benefit of 3D modeling software where I can check projected weight before a piece ever gets cast. But the principle he taught me is the same.
A heavy earring will do three things to you. It will stretch your piercing. Slowly, yes, but it happens and it does not reverse itself without help. It will give you that annoying ache behind your earlobe by mid afternoon, that dull throbbing feeling most women know exactly what I am talking about. And most importantly, you will stop wearing it. Maybe not the first week. But eventually. Into the drawer it goes.
So at ENEA, every earring I design starts with a weight budget. Not a size target. I draw the shape in Rhino 3D, and before I start making it look nice, before I add any details or textures, I check what this thing is going to weigh once it is cast in gold. If it crosses the line, I go back. Thinner here, hollowed out there, different construction approach. Whatever it takes.
The earrings that come out of this process look like they have real substance. But pick them up and they surprise you. They feel like almost nothing. Which means you put them on at seven in the morning and forget they are there until someone compliments them at dinner.
Studs: I Would Pick These Over Every Other Category. Every Time.
If I could only wear one type of earring for the rest of my life? Studs. No hesitation. And I design every category, so I am not saying this because I have not tried everything else.
Studs just work with everything. Every hairstyle. Every neckline. Every occasion from a Monday morning meeting to a Saturday night dinner. They sit close to the ear, they add a small point of interest, and they never compete with anything else you are wearing. That versatility is why my grandfather always told first time customers to start with studs.
Our Éclat Diamond Stud Earrings start at $180 in 14k. Four prongs, a lab grown diamond, the configuration that has basically not changed since my grandfather was making the same design in the 1960s. Because why would it? It works. Some designs are just solved.
The Éclat Diamond Bezel Studs at $198 are my answer for women who tell me they want a diamond stud that feels more modern. The diamond sits inside a thin gold rim instead of prongs. Cleaner. Sleeker. Zero chance of catching on a sweater or a scarf. I designed these specifically because I kept hearing "I love diamond studs but I want something that looks a little different."
At $248, the Phos Diamond Bezel Studs go bigger on the stone. Same bezel concept, more presence. For when you want the diamond to actually be noticed across the table.
And then there are the Petite Cone Studs at $138 which I love because they are just gold. No stone, no diamond. A small sculptural point in solid 14k that adds texture and personality. If you have multiple piercings, these are incredible in a second or third hole paired with a diamond stud in the first.
Short Drops: What Vouclos Considered the Perfect Everyday Earring
My grandfather had strong opinions about many things (Greek grandfathers usually do) and one of them was this: for a woman who wants something more expressive than a stud, something that moves a little, catches a little more light, the short drop earring is the answer. Short being the key word. Never close to the shoulders. Never heavy enough to notice.
And the physics of it back him up. A short drop distributes weight through movement instead of pressing it into one spot on your lobe. The earring sways, the weight shifts, and your ear barely registers it. So a short drop can actually feel lighter than a heavier stud, even if it technically weighs a little more. Counterintuitive but true.
The Linear Diamond Drop Earrings at $290 are exactly this philosophy put into gold and stone. A clean vertical line, one diamond accent, and they hang maybe a centimeter below the lobe. Just enough to move. Nowhere near the jaw, let alone the shoulders. Vouclos would have loved these. He might have even admitted they are a little better than his versions.
The Núde Earring Charm with Diamond at $198 does something clever. It is a fine chain with a diamond that you add to a stud you already own. Transforms any stud into a drop earring. I get emails from women who bought studs from us and then added these six months later and felt like they got a whole new pair of earrings.
Hoops: Why Most Women Have Given Up on Them (and Why They Should Not)
Here is my theory and I hear it confirmed almost every week: the reason so many women say "I love hoops but I never wear mine" comes down to two things. The hoops they own are too heavy. Or too big. Usually both.
Somebody buys a gorgeous pair of gold hoops, wears them once, and by four in the afternoon their earlobes are screaming. The hoops go in a box. They never come out. That is a design failure, not a personal preference.
The Small Hoop Earrings at $198 are the pair I tell people to try when they have given up on hoops entirely. Light. Close to the ear. Click closure so you are not fiddling with them all day. If you have had bad hoop experiences? Start here. I am genuinely confident they will change your mind.
Add a diamond and you get the Diamond Accent Hoops Notes, also $198. Same light construction, same comfortable size, but with a small stone that flashes when you move your head. This is actually one of our best sellers and I think it is because it solves the hoop weight problem while giving you something basic hoops cannot.
The Delicate Diamond Hoops at $298 are for when you want your earrings to make a statement. Pavé diamonds along the front face. I modeled these obsessively to keep the weight down despite all that stone. They make a bigger impression than you would expect from earrings this comfortable.
Diamond Pavé Huggie Earrings at $374 take it further. Huggies sit tighter to the ear than regular hoops, which lets them carry more diamonds without pulling. These are the earrings people think cost twice what they actually cost.
And the Large Thin Hoop Earrings at $428 prove that bigger does not have to mean heavier. Thin profile, large diameter. The drama of a statement hoop with a fraction of the weight. My grandfather would have approved of these. Big visual impact, comfortable enough to forget about.
The Tube Hoops Your Mother Wore (But Ours Are Actually Solid)
The Classic Tube Hoop Earrings Medium at $278 deserve their own moment because they are something specific. This is the shape. The tube profile, medium diameter, that satisfying click when you close them. If you remember your mother or your grandmother wearing gold hoops, this is probably what they looked like.
The difference with ours: they are solid 14k gold. Not hollow. You would be surprised how many tube hoops on the market, even expensive ones, are hollow inside. They feel light because they are literally empty. They also dent if you look at them wrong. Solid means they resist damage, they feel substantial, and any jeweler can work on them decades from now if needed.
Choosing the Right Pair (It Is Simpler Than You Think)
Everyday, do not think about it: Studs. Diamond or plain gold. Put them in on Monday morning, take them out on Sunday night. Done.
Everyday but with some personality: Small hoops or short drops. Light enough for eight straight hours. Interesting enough that people notice.
Evening, dinner, events: Bigger hoops or pavé diamond pieces. More visual impact but still designed so you are not pulling them off halfway through the night.
Multiple piercings: This is where it gets fun. Diamond stud in the first hole, petite gold stud in the second, a tiny huggie in the third. All our pieces share the same design language so they mix without clashing.
Before You Buy: What to Actually Check
Solid or hollow? Even more important in earrings than rings. A hollow hoop dents the first time you hold your phone up to your ear. A hollow stud can crush if you fall asleep wearing it. Every earring we make is solid gold throughout.
The post. That thin pin going through your piercing. In cheap earrings it bends or snaps. A solid 14k gold post on a well made earring will literally outlive you. Make sure it is straight and firmly connected.
The closure. Push backs, screw backs, click closures. What matters most is that you feel secure wearing them. If you are spending mental energy worrying about an earring falling out, you are going to stop wearing it. Our hoops use click closures. Our studs use push backs that grip firmly.
Weight. If a seller does not list earring weight, ask yourself why. We list it on every piece because we are proud of how light our earrings are given their size. It is one of the things we work hardest on.

Common Questions
Will 14k gold earrings turn my ears green? No. Never. That green tint comes from plated or filled jewelry where the cheap base metal under the thin gold layer reacts with your skin. Solid 14k gold does not have a base metal underneath. There is no underneath. It is gold all the way through.
Can I sleep in them? Studs and huggies? Yes. I would take off hoops and drops before bed. Not because they will break. Because you will sleep better and the earring will not get tangled up in pillows or sheets.
Lab grown diamonds, are they real? Yes. Identical crystal structure, identical hardness, identical sparkle. The only difference is where they formed. One in the earth over millions of years, one in a lab over a few weeks. Both are real diamonds by any scientific definition.
Shower safe? Solid gold and diamonds are fine with soap and water. Just rinse afterward. The one thing to avoid: do not sit in chlorinated pools for extended periods wearing gold jewelry.
Cleaning? Warm water, one drop of dish soap, a soft cloth. Let them soak for fifteen minutes, wipe gently, air dry. Once or twice a year, take them to a jeweler for a proper polish. That is literally all the maintenance they need.
